Defeated presidential candidate Mar Roxas has bucked at the resurrection of his supposed ties to two police officials accused by President Rodrigo Duterte of coddling drug syndicates.
In particular, the former Interior Secretary slammed websites and certain traditional media outlets who branded two of the police officials named by Duterte as “Roxas Generals.”
He denied that some of the cops identified by the President helped in his failed presidential bid. He said any involvement he might have had with these officials were only in connection with his job as Interior Secretary.
“Lilinawin ko po: Walang Roxas Generals. Ang mga pinangalanang heneral ay hindi naging bahagi ng aking kampanya,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 6).
In his speech at the 69th anniversary of the Philippine Air Force in Pampanga on Tuesday, Duterte named retired officers PNP Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo Jr. and Chief Supt. Vicente Loot; Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz, Chief Supt Edgardo Tinio, and Director Joel Pagdilao as alleged protectors of drug syndicates.
Garbo is known to be an ardent supporter of Roxas. He and Diaz were identified in news reports during the height of the campaign season as among the police generals spotted in a meeting of the administration standard bearer’s backers at the Novotel Hotel in Araneta-Gateway in Cubao.
Politiko posted the story on Duterte’s bombshell with the title, “Duterte tags ‘Roxas generals’ as drug protectors.”
A report on Philstar.com also highlighted the politiko’s supposed ties with Garbo and Diaz in its article titled, “2 of 5 police generals Duterte dropped linked to Mar’s campaign.”
Roxas believes the reports linking him to the now-controversial generals only prove there are still moves to malign reputation even after the elections are over.
He urged the public to be vigilant about what they read online in light of reports linking him to the some of the police officials named by Duterte.
“Nanawagan po ako sa ating nga kababayan: Maging kritikal sana tayo sa mga website na nagkukinwaring nagbabalita, pero sa katunayan ay nagpapakalat ng propaganda at maling impormasyon,” Roxas said.
