The Philippines in the '60s was notoriously lawless. Gangsters walked the streets with no regard for or fear of the law. 

From individual criminals to ganglords, there were plenty of reasons why chaos reigned.

Here are the most notorious criminals to ever walk Philippine streets.

1. Asiong Salonga aka Hari ng Tondo

A true crime king, Asiong controlled the streets of Tondo for several years. Hated by the authorities but loved by his peers, it was believed that the 'Hari ng Tondo' was also a Robin Hood-like figure, taking from the rich and giving to the poor. 

He died at the age of 27 when he was shot during a drinking session. His life story was the basis for the 2011 movie 'Manila Kingpin: The Asion Salonga Story'.

2. Arutoro Porcuna aka Boy Golden

Known for his violence when dealing with rival gangs, he met his bloody end in the morning of December 24th, 1963 when he was gunned down by the police. 

Similar to Asiong, his life was also the basis for another Jeorge ‘E.R.’ Estregan move, 'Boy Golden: Shoot To Kill'.


3. Benjamin Garcia aka Ben Tumbling

With a nickname that definitely suited him, Benjamin was a former stuntman who turned to a life of crime. 

A known police-hater, he once murdered over 7 cops within the span of just a month. Supposedly, his hatred for cops was due to him being wronged by them. Cops allegedly tortured him and raped his wife.

Assassinated at the young age of 23, his life was portrayed in the 2012 film 'Alyas Ben Tumbling’

4. Marcila Ama Perez aka. Baby Ama

Don’t let his child like looks confuse you, this was a killer hardened by tragedy. 

Because of his appearance, he was tortured and abused while he was imprisoned. His breaking point came when his wife, a victim of rape, committed suicide.

He then became a feared hitman in prison. He met his end at the hands of the electric chair. 

He was portrayed by Rudy Fernandez in the 1976 flick, ‘Bitayin si Baby Ama’.

5. Leonardo Menecio aka Nardong Putik

This guy is basically Pedro Penduko as a murderer. This Kawit, Cavite native had an amulet that many believed granted him supernatural protection. 

He was known as another Robin Hood figure, basing his operations in his hometown. 

He was eventually killed in an ambush orchestrated by NBI agent Epimaco Velasco. Reports say that he took 60 bullets before he died. 

His life story inspored the 1972 action fim, ‘Nardong Putik: Kilabot ng Cavite’.

6. Warlito Toledo aka Waway

Last but definitely not the least, Waway struck fear in Cavite for his numerous murder and rape cases. It was believed that this man raped and murdered 40 women in one day. 

Also with a tragic backstory, it was believed that Waway’s wife was raped and murdered, thus beginning his quest for vengeance. 

Until now, no one knows what happened to Waway.
